Big Picture Learning

Big Picture Learning at FBUSD

What if school was built around you — your interests, your strengths, your goals? That's the idea behind Big Picture Learning, and it's exactly what FBUSD's Big Picture Learning program offers students in our Alternative Education program.

Big Picture Learning is not a traditional classroom experience. It's a personalized, project-based approach where students take the lead in designing their own education — with the support of caring advisors, real-world mentors, and their own community.

Our Mission

The mission of FBUSD Big Picture Learning is to engage students in real-world learning and help them design a curriculum built around their own interests, passions, and talents.

Why It Works

Big Picture Learning is grounded in a simple but powerful idea: students learn best when their education is connected to their real lives.

  • When you learn about what you're interested in, you learn faster and more deeply.
  • When you connect with experts outside the classroom, you become better prepared for life after school.
  • When you have strong relationships with multiple adults, you have better learning outcomes.

What Makes Big Picture Learning Different

About Big Picture Learning

FBUSD's program is part of a global network of over 275 schools united by a shared belief: that all students can and should live lives of their own design. Big Picture Learning was founded in 1995 with the mission of demonstrating that schooling can — and should — be radically different. Today it connects students, educators, and communities around the world.
