Fort Bragg High School General Scholarship Information

This site will be updated frequently--please visit often to see the most recent additions.
We suggest students visit the counseling office for additional information
on the scholarship application process.

The links below will give detailed information about what must be included with the application form in order for your application to be complete. 

 Please note: Whenever Grade Point Average (GPA) is referred to in the scholarship process it is your CUMULATIVE high school GPA, not a GPA from any single grading period.  If this is unclear to you, please ask for clarification in the counseling office.

Best Buy Scholarship

To be eligible:

  • Be students currently in grades 9-12 living in the United States or Puerto Rico. Students from public, private, alternate, or home schools are eligible to apply. Students attending school on a military base using an APO address are not eligible.
  • Have a minimum cumulative high school grade point average of 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale), or equivalent.
  • Demonstrate commitment to and involvement in community volunteer service or work experience.
  • Be planning to enter a full-time undergraduate course of study at an accredited two- or four-year college, university, vocational-technical school, or online school/program in the United States or Puerto Rico following high school graduation. Applicants who are current high school seniors must enroll no later than fall 2012. Applicants who are in grades 9-11 must plan to enroll no later than the fall term following high school graduation.
  • Have never been selected as a Best Buy Scholarship recipient.

Pacific Gas and Electric Company

PG & E has an updated website with scholarship applications to download.

Please note that to apply for a PG&E scholarship, students must complete the basic scholarship application AND complete the supplemental application to the specific Employee Resource Group. (This will make more sense when you visit the website.)

Soroptimist International Scholarship

This is an academic scholarship; students with a GPA of 3.00+ are encouraged to apply.

  1. Make a Cover Page stating that the application is for the Soroptimist International of Fort Bragg Scholarship.
  2. Photocopy your ENTIRE  FBHS General Application: application page, resume, essay, letters of recommendation.
  3. Request a new transcript from the Counseling Office. 

Enclose all in a folder and mail to:

Sharon Handelin Edwards Memorial Scholarship given by Soroptimist International of Fort Bragg

This scholarship is intended for female students who plan to major in business.

  1. Make a Cover Page stating that the application is for the Sharon Handelin Edwards Memorial Scholarship.
  2. Photocopy your ENTIRE  FBHS General Application: application page, resume, essay, letters of recommendation.
  3. Request a new transcript from the Counseling Office.

Buick Achievers Scholarship

Applicants to the Buick Achievers Scholarship Program must:

  • Be high school seniors, high school graduates, or current post-secondary undergraduate students.
  • Plan to enroll in full-time undergraduate study at a U.S. based accredited four-year college or university for the entire 2012-13 academic year. Proprietary and online schools are not eligible.
  • Plan to major in a course of study that focuses on Engineering/Technology or select Design and Business related programs of study. See the list of eligible majors.
  • Demonstrate an interest in pursuing a career in the automotive or related industries using these areas of study.
  • Be U.S. citizens and have permanent residence in the United States

Buick Achievers Scholarship Program

Applicants must:

   * Be high school seniors or graduates or be current undergraduate students
   * Plan to enroll in full-time undergraduate study at an accredited U.S. four-year college or    university for the entire 2012–13 academic year (excluding proprietary and online schools)
   * Plan to major in a specified course of study that focuses on Engineering/Technology or select Design and Business-related programs of study. See the list of eligible majors.
   * Be interested in pursuing a career in the automotive or related industries
   * Be U.S. citizens and have permanent residence in the United States

Playing with Purpose award

The SportQuest Playing With Purpose Scholarship Program is now accepting applications.

To be eligible the student must:

  • be a high school sophomore, junior or senior
  • have maintained a minimum 2.0 GPA
  • be a varsity level athlete in one or more sports
  • be a committed follower of Jesus Christ

Mendocino College Scholarships

Community Foundation of Sonoma County

There are two scholarships for which FBHS students (Mendocino County residents) may apply:

  • American Institute of Architects Redwood Empire Scholars Fund
  • Richard T. Torkelson Memorial Scholarship Fund for Journalism

To be eligible, students must:

  • demonstrate clear financial need
  • plan to attend a 2-yr or 4-yr college or university full time
  • possess an "acceptable academic record"

This is NOT a postmark deadline.

Through the Looking Glass

To be eligible, a student must be a high school graduate (or graduating senior) by Summer 2012, planning to attend a two-year or four-year college in Fall 2012 in pursuit of an AA, BA or BS degree, and have at least one parent with a disability.

Five of the fifteen 2012 scholarships will also consider extreme financial hardship (poverty level) in addition to the above criteria. Please read the Financial Need section on the Application Form if you wish to be considered for one of the five scholarships that also consider financial need.

Cabrillo Civic Clubs of California, Inc.

To be eligible for this scholarship applicants must:

  •  be of Portuguese descent on either father's or mother's side, be a US citizen or permanent resident.
  • have maintained a 3.50 GPA 
  • have participated in at least three extra-curricular activities while in high school.

Italian Catholic Federation

  • Minimum 3.2 GPA
  • Be a Roman Catholic of Italian Descent

Applications will be judged and evaluated on 

  • Scholastic Achievement
  • Financial Need
  • Leadership Role
  • Faculty Recommendation and Character Reference
  • Extracurricular Activities and Charitable Efforts
  • Family Membership/Activities in the I.C.F. (if applicable)

Completed applications must be received by the organization no later than March 15

California Association of Nurseries and Garden Centers

While all seniors who plan to enter college in a horticulture-related field in fall, 2012 are eligible to apply for a CANERS scholarship.  While grades are important, but a B student who participates in horticulture related activities may be selected over the A student who does not participate in 4-H, gardening or other related activities.

Mendocino County Farm Bureau

For students who desire to begin a career in the agricultural industry or in an ag-related field.  Criteria for this scholarship include academic performance, leadership skills, extra-curricular activities, financial need, and a commitment to study agriculture. The recipient will be required to be enrolled full-time in a vocational school or college prior to the release of the award money.

Application is available in the counseling office.

(NOTE: this application requests 3 letters of recommendation.)

Postmark deadline is March 15.

Gloriana Musical Theatre Performing Arts Scholarship

To apply please photo copy your entire FBHS General Scholarship application. If your essay does not discuss your performing arts history, the importance of you continuing in this field and how you plan to use scholarship money, please include a brief additional essay that addresses those specific topics or rewrite your essay centered around those topics.  Additionally, your letters of recommendation must include one from a professional in the performing arts field.     

Criteria for selection are:  serious continuation of performing arts studies, prior experience and financial need.

U.S. Bank Scholarship Program

Recipients are selected at random for this $1000 U.S. Bank Scholarship.

Coastal Mendocino Association of Realtors

 

Eligibility criteria:

  • All applications will be considered; selection will be made based on academic success, student leadership, stated goals and financial need.

California Wine Grape Growers Foundation

Region 14 of the American Iris Society

 

The members of Region 14 of the American Iris Society shall award a $500 scholarship with the intent of promoting interest in irises.  The award shall be given to a student demonstrating interest in iris activities with Region 14 or pursuing a career in horticulture, floriculture, landscaping, nursery production, or a related field.

The Community Foundation of Mendocino County

 

This Foundation oversees the scholarships listed below, with each scholarship having specific criteria for eligibility.

 

California Retired Teachers Association Division 55 Bessie Scott Scholarship Fund created in 1970 by Mendocino County retired teachers in memory of Ukiah teacher, Bessie Scott, this scholarship is awarded to Mendocino County public high school seniors who plan to attend 4-year colleges or universities to study education.  Awardees are selected on their ability and aptitude for a teaching career, prior academic performance and community and/or extracurricular involvement.

 

California Retired Teachers Association Division 55 Hilmer Finne Scholarship Fund created in honor of Hilmer and Vivian Finne, is awarded to Mendocino County public high school seniors who plan to attend 4-year colleges or universities to pursue careers in music.  Awardees are selected for their commitment to music, proven talent and positive outlook, prior academic performance, and their community and/or extracurricular involvement.

 

Mendocino Agricultural Families’ Scholarship Fund (Winegrowers’ Scholarship Fund) is offered by the Mendocino Winegrowers Alliance and the Savings Bank of Mendocino County, to recognize the invaluable contributions of the agricultural workforce and to invest in the future of the Mendocino County agricultural industry.  This scholarship is awarded to Mendocino County high school seniors who are children of agricultural workers and who are interested in attending vocational schools, community colleges or 4-year colleges or universities.  Awardees are selected for their potential for academic success, their community and/or extracurricular involvement and their financial need.

 

Jerry Juhl Fund for the Artscreated by Susan Juhl in honor of her husband Jerry, this scholarship is for Mendocino and Fort Bragg high school seniors who plan to attend 4-year colleges or universities to study the performing arts, including music, dance, theatre, film and puppetry.  Awardees are selected for their potential for career success in the performing arts and their prior academic performance (3.0 GPA desired but not required.)  Candidates for this scholarship must have a  portfolio/example of the student’s performing art to share with the scholarship committee, especially if it cannot be performed in an interview.

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Alumni Scholarship

To be eligible the applicant must have been accepted to Cal Poly,SLO. Selection will be based on citizenship, school activities and academic achievement.

Animation Career Review

This highly competitive scholarship is for a student who is interested in a career in a field related to animation, which could include 3D animation, 3D graphics, cartooning, digital art, game art, graphic design, illustration, multimedia, ETC~!

This is a statewide competition for students with an interest directly related to those mentioned above.  To be competitive, please be certain to have your essay, and ideally your entire application, proofread by an English teacher.

Mendocino County Cattlemen's Association Rudy Mora Beef Scholarship

To be elgibile:

  • Student has maintained a minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Student has demonstrated high moral character, good citizenship, strong work ethic, and financial need.
  • Student has been active in 4-H, FFA or Young Cattlemen's Association.
  • Student has had his/her own commercial or registered cattle project, market steer or heifer project ( beef or dairy) or has been involved in working with a cattle operation.
  • Student as applied to, or been accepted by, an accredited trade school, college or university

Applications are available in the FBHS counseling office
