INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY CROSS-CURRICULAR PROJECT

Info Tech students have been engaged in a comprehensive cross-curricular project during the 3rd quarter. Students selected partners and then, using MS Excel, MS Word, and the Internet, have been creating a fictitious restaurant to be opened on the Mendocino Coast. Patterned after Mary Makela's unit in her R.O.P Culinary Arts class, Noyo's Restaurant Project focuses on developing computer skills and learning some basic business procedures.

Students completed the following activities:

Researched current restaurants on the Mendocino Coast.
Named their restaurant and wrote a mission statement.
Designed a logo and created business cards and letterhead stationery which included the logo.
Designed a blueprint/floor plan of the restaurant.
On the Internet, priced the following items: equipment and furniture, kitchen supplies, dishes/silverware/glasses, guest checks, lighting, pictures and wall hangings, decorative plants, staff uniforms, menu boards, signs, and maintenance supplies.
Used MS Excel to create a cost sheet which included the items above.
Researched similar restaurants, determined what food they would serve, and designed a menu which included descriptions and pictures of dishes served.
Determined job titles and number of each type of employee; hourly wage, hours worked per week, and weekly wages for each employee; weekly wages for entire staff. All this information was then calculated on an MS Excel expense sheet.
Wrote a grand opening letter using their created stationery.
Presented a proposal for their restaurant to a committee of students and staff members.
