Classified Substitute Employment Information

All classified positions, positions that do not require a teaching credential, do require  a High School Diploma or equivalent. Additionally, California Education Code 45344.5 requires a paraprofessional to meet certain competency requirements. Usually competency is met by a passing score on the Paraprofessional Proficiency Exam (testing can be arranged with the personnel office), or by possession of  an associate’s degree or higher (a minimum 60 units of college coursework spread equally among the five core subject areas). The Paraprofessional Proficiency Exam can either have been taken locally or have been taken in another California school district. If you have passed the exam in another California school district you are exempt from the District's exam but must provide verification in the form of a letter from the agency on agency letterhead, where the exam was passed.

For consideration of employment as a classified substitute the following documents must be attached to your application:

  • A completed EdJoin application (http:\\www.edjoin.org)
  • Resume
  • Verification of Paraprofessional Proficiency Exam  Passing Score, as applicable to the position for which applied

If offered employment the candidate must submit:

  • Verification of a negative TB Test (less than 4 years old)
  • Completed fingerprint form (obtained from the Personnel Office)

Substitutes work on an on-call, as-needed basis. There is no guarantee of minimum hours, nor is there a guarantee that you will be hired as an employee. Classified Substitutes are assigned to fill the position of a regular employee who is absent from work. Classified substitutes are subject to specific assignments, transfers, or termination of assignments at the discretion of the District. A Classified Substitute Handbook is available for your reference.

*Applications for classified substitutes are accepted throughout the year but submission of employment materials does not guarantee employment.

** Candidates without a current TB test and clearance of a fingerprint background check performed by local law enforcement for the school district, will not be allowed to work until after clearance has been obtained.
