Welcome Back!
Dear Parents and Community Members of the Fort Bragg Unified School District:
Each new school year brings with it a climate of growth and change. It is an exciting time for both parents and educators. It heralds an opportunity for new beginnings and new challenges. Back to School is a time to build on the foundation of our past and to commit ourselves to our future.
The State continues to struggle with funding schools. We have addressed the cuts necessary to keep the District solvent, and I am happy to say that our cuts have been minimal compared to other districts in the State. Undoubtedly, we will be relying more on fundraising and the generosity of our community to continue operating some programs.
The District also remains under sanctions as a Program Improvement District for not showing adequate progress for all of our student populations. Our District is identified as a Program Improvement district because we missed the established target for proficiency for mathematics and language arts amongst our student population. The targets set by No Child Left Behind (NCLB) for adequate yearly progress continue to increase each year. In 2010 we met 11 out of 22 of the NCLB criteria.
The preponderance of research tells us that we can pull ourselves out from under these sanctions by improving instruction and operating as a professional learning community. We need to dedicate ourselves to providing the appropriate interventions for our students in need and making their achievement our primary focus.
Modernization continues on our campuses. The Bond measure passed by the voters in 2008 is being used to fund improvements including the modernization of the high school and a solar energy project. Construction will continue to be a fact of life in the district, but the results will be well worth the effort
Financial, demographic and academic information about the District and its schools can be found in the School Accountability Report Card (SARC) produced by the District annually. You can find the most recent SARC and other accountability information on our District website (www.fbusd.us). If you do not have access to the Internet, the District will be happy to provide copies of information for you.
As the curtain raises on another school year, let me invite you to visit our campuses and become directly involved in your child’s education by meeting with the teachers and attending school functions. Your child’s success in school is often linked to your level of involvement. Show them you care about learning and become an active member of your school community.
