Nutrition Hopscotch

The Network for A Healthy California, North Coast Region purchased a fruit-themed playground stencil to be loaned out to partner schools in the region. Lupe Merritt was the first principal in the region to request the stencil, and she worked with custodian Ron Burns and staff to incorporate a beautiful color scheme to highlight the fruits featured.

The stencil incorporates The Network logo of Eat Healthy, Be Active, Have Fun, and features fruits.  The Network for A Healthy California Physical Activity Specialist Laurel Chambers, decided to pursue getting the stencil since studies show that playground markings increase the level of physical activity during recess, as well as beautify the playground.

When nutrition educator Petra Schulte picked up the stencil to bring it to Redwood Elementary for incorporating the hopscotch grid on its playground, Ron exclaimed, “The kids like the stencil so much, there is a long line during recess.”
